How does IoT help environmental and social goals?

It’s no surprise that practically every high-tech company is prioritizing sustainability. Emerging technologies such as 5G, blockchain, and AI enable new use cases for IoT’s smart, connected gadgets. However, as devices become more capable, they are generating a tremendous increase in energy use, water consumption, and CO2 emissions, according to Accenture.

As a result, high-tech firms are implementing sustainability programs and designing products with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives. Many high-tech companies have demonstrated their commitment to developing more sustainable products and projects at recent tech events, displaying their commitment to generating more sustainable products and initiatives. While the IoT platform is intended to be energy efficient, the rapid expansion in the number of IoT solutions increases the need for device manufacturers to enhance power efficiency even further.

Ways to implement sustainability into IoT

Companies should consider leveraging IoT solutions to increase product sustainability and support more environmentally responsible manufacturing. Akenza has highlighted three measures that high-tech enterprises may take to assist them in achieving their ESG objectives.

    1. Make the best use of cloud resources.

Green cloud is a concept that has emerged due to the rapid growth of cloud usage. It is a practice that focuses on optimizing cloud energy and resources. Companies should create a baseline of current data center energy use, compute requirements, and sustainability objectives.

There are tools to help with this and cloud design products that reduce carbon emissions at every stage of the journey. Such tools employ algorithms to assess the greenness of potential cloud solutions based on various factors, including the cloud service providers’ carbon emissions targets, locations, energy sources, and willingness to change.

    1. Make the switch to energy-efficient smart buildings.

Smart buildings may save energy, decrease costs, and generate cash. High-tech firms can create smart building products and services for sale while testing and using them to meet their sustainability goals.

Building functions such as climate control, lighting, and security can benefit from automated processes. It enables businesses to help cut energy usage, maximize space use, and lessen the environmental effect of their facilities.

    1. Enhance semiconductor design and manufacturing

Semiconductor design and manufacture are now at the heart of practically every product. Because of the advancements in IoT solutions, AI, and machine learning, semiconductor makers can now manage and analyze data to establish predictive maintenance programs.

By predicting process faults, custom analytics can detect impending deposition process problems and avert major yield decreases. Data can be applied to a single asset, many machines, a manufacturing line, or even an entire fabrication process.

To take these procedures a step further, digital twins provide a precise simulation of real-world assets that update in real-time via a continuous stream of sensor data. They serve as a testing ground for firms to try out new procedures and assess issues without incurring extra costs or harming the environment.

Companies should adopt a circular approach in which sustainability begins at the design stage rather than after the fact through recycling. High-tech firms that design for recyclability and lifespan can save money, generate new revenue streams and minimize their carbon footprints.

Improvements in IoT platform sustainability are occurring all around us and are being implemented into personal devices, smart technologies in our homes, cars, workplace buildings, and the environment. It’s time to take action and leverage sustainable solutions to gain a competitive advantage.

    Conclusion

The internet of things (IoT) is a network of dedicated devices called ” things ” deployed and utilized to collect and share real-world data through the internet or other networks.

The internet of things provides enterprises with real-time information and business insights that, when implemented, can help them become more productive. IT administrators, architects, developers, and CIOs considering an internet of things deployment must grasp what the internet of things is, how it works, its applications, requirements, tradeoffs, and how to install IoT solution devices and infrastructures.

The possibilities for connecting the world around us are limitless. It is a matter of awareness, expense, and complexity. Akenza is confident that by significantly decreasing businesses’ work and complexity when developing IoT solutions, we can lead the Internet of Things’ progression toward broad market application.
